She should be feeling something. Anger, fear, grief, sorrow, something. But she's numb. There's a full-body tingle that's trapped her in her head. She's visted Freya's memorial, she's seen the letters carved into the stone, she's ran her fingers over the flowers that decorate it. But she feels nothing. The softness of the petals is missed, the crunch of the gravel beneath her feet is gone, the pain in her ears, her shoulder, her nose, is forgotten.[break][break]

This isn't real. Freya Morningstar isn't dead, she can't be. This wasn't happening.[break][break]

Emma stands, looming over the memorial. There's no expression on her face, just a blank stare. Footsteps behind her fall on deaf ears and a warning growl breaks the silence as

…as a grumpy-looking off-duty Ranger approaches. Having shed the traditional get-up he usually wears while working, he’s clothed in his usual fare—long brown overcoat, work and scuffed hiking boots, presentable inner dress clothes—as he approaches the monument.

While he didn’t know much about the members of the Council (having preferred to stay out of the Pyroar’s den, thank you very much), he was more than disturbed to see that there was an angry-looking Pokémon accompanying the stranger who was at the little memorial.

One of the larger estates in town had lost their heiress-apparent, and from what he’d heard from his Gym Leader friend this woman who’d died had the guts to speak up against the now-retired Water-type Gym Leader.

Ironically, said Gym Leader he’d fought alongside with in the Tentacruel Invasion, where—

-the unfamiliar and distinctly rocky smell of the Midnight-forme Lycanroc standing not too far away from a darkly-clothed individual. Or, perhaps, the Jellicent was attracted to both the woman and her Pokemon given how strange and out-of-place they seemed while standing next to the former councilwoman's memorial.[break][break]

Emma regards both individuals with cool indifference and makes a subtle gesture with her hand to the Pokemon at her side, who was presently still bristled with unease. Human interaction outside of his master wasn't common, and he remained ever vigilant and careful.[break][break]

The two appear to know one another and Emma takes this as a clear sign she should leave. Time had not been kind to her, it seemed, as she had very clearly chosen an improper time to weep quietly at Freya's grave. As uncomfortable as she is, however, Emma can't engineer a way out of the present situation, and instead remains motionless and on edge as she watches the pair.

“Yes,” he says quietly in the Gym Leader’s direction—he would have to make a mental note to put a challenge on her Gym before her supposed ‘retirement’ from the position.

Would he be able to get at least a battle with her before she retired? Putting the possibilities aside, he then turns to their other companion, eyebrows rising slightly.

It’s here he sees a canid-like Pokémon, and the random thought of the League’s #1 dog boy pops into his mind for the briefest of moments. Hearing the growling coming from the Pokémon that clearly belonged to the other woman, he wonders what’s up with her.

And for that matter, why does this lady look all dishelved? Like she’d been through the wringer. Turning his attention to the other lady, he clears his throat and then tries to smooth over the potential awkward silence with conversation.

“Did you know her—“ he begins in the dark-haired woman’s direction, hoping he’d get an answer—

Well, that at least answered something.

While the rest of the details were hazy, he remembered seeing the fallen Council member among the crowd during the kaiju attack on Slateport, although they weren’t in the same group that had fended off the gigantic Tentacruel from wrecking the port city to the ground so soon after it had barely reopened.

Looking over at the Gym Leader slightly and wondering if it was okay for him to talk, he looks at the other woman and sighs.

“At least you should know this—the last I heard from her, she helped lead the fight against one of the Tentacruel. After that, we lost track of things because things went south quickly,” he mutters, at an utter loss on what else to share.

At least he’d mentioned something. Looking over at Olivia, he hopes that she would back him up with his story, because—
